The Album

There it is.  Just look at it.

Phrases like "greatest album of all time" get thrown around a lot, but let's not kid ourselves.  Can you truly say that an album is the greatest until you've heard them all.

Let's hear this one.  Together.

In this blog, I will be digging deep, deep into Heartbeat in a way that few have ever done before.  I invite you on the journey with me.  As we study each track to see what we can learn from it, take a listen on Spotify, or Amazon Music.  Or even purchase the album on iTunes.  You won't be disappointed.

Let's begin.

In 1986, Don Johnson was walking down a street.  Probably.  This is all guesswork.  Like I said, he was walking down the street in a white linen suit when suddenly the Devil himself emerged from behind a palm tree.

"Don," said the Devil.  "If you can best me, then I will give you the Key to Rock Music."

"Call me 'Sonny,'" said Don.  "What do I have to do?"

"You pick the contest," said the Devil, and that was the last mistake he made, because Don picked fashion.  The Devil was couldn't match the combined might of a Versace suit, a pink T-shirt, Ray-Bans, and a five o'clock shadow.

"You beat me fair and square, Sonny," said the Devil.  "Now here's how you write music."

"I'm listening."

"Start with a musical intro.  Not too long."

"Intro.  Got it."

"Then a verse, followed by a chorus."

"I'm with you, Devil."

"Then a second verse, and the chorus again."

"Tricky.  Then what?"

"You haven't heard the trick yet.  Then you do a bridge."

Don blinked.  "Instrumental or vocal?"

The Devil spread wide his hands.  "Your choice.  Both if you want."

"All right.  What's next?"

"The chorus again.  And again, and again.  Until it just... fades away."  And with these words, the Devil himself faded away, leaving Don with the key to musical stardom.

It was a formula that carried him through ten full tracks, without fail.  No variance.  And if that ain't some devil-magic, I don't know what is.
